The studio
A floor that was drawn before it was built
A parquetry floor starts as a drawing on paper. Every piece is cut from solid stock, fitted dry on the bench, and set into the field so the pattern holds its line across the room.
Most flooring decisions are made by the square foot. This work is made by the piece, which is why a medallion, a border and the field around them are drawn together rather than ordered separately. Designers and architects tend to arrive with a sketch or a room photograph, and the drawing starts from there.

A compass rose, a star, a monogram. Cut from solid hardwood, ringed, and let into the field flush with the floor.

Borders & Inlays
A running band around the room, a threshold marker, a diamond chain in contrasting wood. Mitered at the corners so the rhythm holds.

Herringbone & Chevron
Two patterns people often confuse. Both start from a centerline drawn on the subfloor, which is why the run stays true across a long room.

Exotic & Wide-Plank Hardwood
Walnut, hickory, padauk, ebonized oak. Boards chosen for figure, laid so the strongest grain falls where the light hits it.

Eight long points between eight shorter, four cardinal letters, acanthus scrolls running off the diagonal, all ringed in dark stringing and set flush into a hard maple field. At standing height the walnut reads almost black against the maple, and that contrast is what keeps the points legible from the far side of the room.
Materials
The wood
Species get picked for how they behave next to each other. A pattern only works if the light wood stays light against the dark one after the finish goes on and the sun does its work.
Hard maple
The pale field in the rose compass floor. Close, even grain that holds a crisp inlay edge.
Black walnut
The dark side of most of our contrast work. Wide plank walnut also meets stone in the curved transitions.
Padauk
The red band in the interlaced star medallion. Strong color straight off the saw.
Hickory
The field under that star. Wide tone range board to board, which reads as movement across a big floor.
Oak
The ground for border work, including the diamond-chain floor. Takes a stain evenly and mills clean.
Ebonized oak
Oak taken to black through the grain rather than over it, used on floors and stair treads.
Stone
Travertine and marble, cut to meet wood along a curve or set as a mosaic medallion.
Process
From drawing to floor
Four stages, in this order, because each one settles a decision the next one depends on. You see a drawing and a cost figure before any wood is cut.
The process in full- 01
Measure and draw
We take the room, then draw the pattern into it at scale. Scale matters more than style here: a medallion that suits a 12-foot entry disappears in a great room.
- 02
Choose the wood
Species are selected for contrast and for how they will move in your house. Samples go on the actual floor, in the actual light, before anything is ordered.
- 03
Cut and fit on the bench
Pieces are cut and assembled dry, so every joint is proven before glue. This is where the hours go, and it is what keeps the seams tight later.
- 04
Install
The field is laid to the drawn centerline, the pattern is set into it, then the floor is sanded flat and finished as one surface.

Part of this work has to happen in your room
A medallion can be built on a bench. A field pattern that has to land square against your walls cannot, and neither can the sanding that makes pattern and floor read as one surface.
